Critical Skill - Therapy Agility:

Therapy works best when it can move with you rather than ask you to move toward it. I want to argue that one of the most underrated skills in modern therapy is agility: the capacity of a therapist to adapt, to draw from different models, and to speak in the language of your life rather than the language of their training.

What I mean by “agile therapist”

The style should feel warm and inclusive, conveying adaptability and connection.

Many therapists are trained in one primary model and then practice almost entirely inside that frame. Cognitive behavioural therapy. Psychodynamic therapy. Acceptance and commitment therapy. Each has value, but none is a full description of a human life.

Agility is the ability to shift gears. An agile therapist can notice that the way they are working is not landing for you and can pivot. Instead of pushing harder with the same tool, they reach for another. They can move from analysing your thoughts to exploring your family story, to experimenting with behaviour, to sitting quietly with grief, as your needs change session to session.

This is not “making it up as you go along”. It is a disciplined responsiveness, grounded in solid models, but not confined by any one of them.

Why one-size-fits-all therapy falls short

Most mainstream models grew up in Western, individualistic cultures that prize autonomy, rationality, and “fixing yourself”. That framework suits some people, but not everyone.

If your sense of self is woven through family, community, spirituality, or land, therapy that treats you as an isolated individual can feel subtly off. You might feel misunderstood without being able to put your finger on why. You show up, you talk, you even learn some clever skills, yet something in you stays untouched.

When a therapist insists that “this is the model” and the model does not quite fit, you are often the one who feels like the problem. You get labelled as “resistant” or “unmotivated”, rather than the work being acknowledged as misaligned. Too many people quietly drop out of therapy at this point, not because they are beyond help, but because the help on offer is too narrow.

An agile therapist is willing to treat the model as the thing that may need adjusting, not you.

Culture, story, and the metaphors that matter

We do not live our lives as theory. We live them as stories and images. The metaphors that shape your world are not academic; they are local and personal.

If you grew up around the sea, you might make sense of struggle as weathering storms, learning currents, and reading tides. If you come from a collectivist culture, you might think in terms of threads in a fabric, obligations and reciprocity, not “my needs versus yours”. Someone with chronic pain may experience life as carrying an invisible weight, rationing spoons, negotiating each day with their body.

An agile therapist listens for these metaphors and works inside them. Instead of insisting you “reframe your cognitions”, they might talk with you about how to sail in rougher water, or how to repair a frayed net, or how to carry your load without doing it alone. The psychological work might be similar, but the language is yours, not theirs.

That move sounds small. It is not. Being met in your own images is often the first time therapy feels truly relevant, rather than like homework from another world.

Holding many models lightly

There is a quiet fear in the profession that if we move beyond one favoured model, we will descend into chaos or lose “evidence-based” status. I think the opposite is true. The more rigidly we cling to a single way of working, the more people we leave behind.

Agile therapists are still accountable to evidence. They know what they are doing and why. But they hold their models lightly and their relationship with you tightly. They can:

  • Use structured interventions when structure helps, then relax them when it becomes a cage.

  • Honour your cultural and communal context instead of treating it as background noise.

  • Weave together skills, insight, and meaning-making rather than declaring one of them the only ingredient that matters.

The question they keep returning to is simple: “Is this helping this person, in front of me, right now?” If the answer is “no”, they change what they are doing. Not in five years when the next guideline is published, but in the very next session.

What this means if you are seeking therapy

If you are considering therapy or already in it, you are allowed to care about agility. You can listen for whether your therapist is more loyal to their model than to your experience. You can notice whether they have room in the conversation for your culture, your metaphors, your way of understanding suffering and healing.

You do not need a therapist who has memorised every new technique. You need someone willing to move with you. Someone who can draw from many traditions without forcing you into any of them. Someone who treats therapy not as a fixed product to deliver, but as a living conversation that should evolve as you do.

In my view, that kind of agility is not an optional extra. It is central to ensuring that more people can receive the full benefit therapy has to offer.
